About Green Tea

– What does Certified USDA Organic Mean?
Products sold as “Certified Organic” in the United States are required to meet the strict standards of the United States Department of Agriculture National Organic Program (NOP).

To be certified organic, I.E. Green Tea complies with stringent NOP requirements that cover every aspect of organic farming, processing, transportation, labels and packaging. Following NOP mandates means no sewage sludge, no synthetic pesticides, no herbicides, no fungicides, no antibiotics, no growth hormones, no artificial fertilizers, no GMOs and no irradiation ever gets anywhere near the ingredients in I.E. Green Tea.

The USDA Organic seal on our packaging is your assurance that I.E. Green Tea is certified organic. Beware if you don’t see the USDA Organic seal. There are those out there who may call themselves organic, but can’t actually meet the certification standards to back up their claims.

– What is the difference between green tea, black tea and white tea?
All tea is produced from varieties of the same plant, Camellia sinensis. Slightly different methods of preparation determine if tea is designated green, black or white.
Green tea is made from leaves that are fresh roasted immediately after being picked, which preserves their powerful antioxidants and captures the gentle, all natural flavor.

– How much tea do I need to drink each day?
Studies show that one cup of green tea has about 30 to 60 milligrams of polyphenols, which is well below the recommended levels. To receive maximum benefits from tea, individuals should take in about 120 to 600 milligrams of  polyphenols, every day. Luckily, with I.E. Green Tea, you’re getting 300mg per serving

– What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are substances that prevent or slow the breakdown of another substance by inhibiting oxidation or reactions promoted by oxygen, peroxides, or free radicals. They help prevent free radical formation inside the body, preventing or delaying cell and tissue damage caused by free radicals. Our bodies use approximately 200mg of antioxidants each day fighting free radicals. They can only be replaced with antioxidant rich nutritious foods. I.E. Green Tea is an optimal source for replacing those valuable antioxidants.

– What are free radicals?

Free radicals are unstable molecules such as hydrogen, nitric oxide (NO) and oxygen (O2). They occur naturally in the body and result from chemical reactions during normal cellular processes. They also result from exposure to pollution, sunlight, cigarette smoke, auto and industrial emissions and other toxins. Free radicals attack molecules in the body and can damage cells resulting in the formation of another free radical and the process just continues. The scientific community suggest that free radical damage is a possible contributor to chronic and aging diseases including cancer, heart disease, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, cataracts and Alzheimer’s disease.

– Is green tea a good source of antioxidants?
Green tea has more antioxidant protection than either Vitamin C or E. In 1997, Lester A. Mitscher of the University of Kansas demonstrated that at least three of green tea’s catechins outperform a number of other common natural antioxidants.

– What are catechins?

A crystalline flavonoid compound or its derivatives having antioxidant properties.

 – Is green tea better than black tea?

For maximum health benefits it often is. Fresh green tea leaves contain the highest polyphenol amounts. All teas – black, green and oolong are from the same plant, Camellia sinensis, that has polyphenols. The process that the leaf goes though determines the tea variety and the eventual polyphenol content.

Black tea is allowed to dry slowly, essentially fermenting, which oxidizes the leaves and deactivates many of the polyphenols.

Oolong tea is dried (oxidized) some, but not completely, before being steamed to stop the oxidation process.

Green tea is roasted before it’s dried, which deactivates the enzyme that causes oxidation and locks in a high polyphenol content ~60 percent more than black tea.
